How it began ...

When a local Melksham pub was taken over by a Greek Cypriot chef we were obviously interested. We got chatting with manager Tony, helped out with posters and were invited to get a crowd of grecophiles together for their opening night Meze on 29th September 2006.

A good time was had by all - some 34 grecophiles (Greek-o-File subscribers from Melksham and surrounding area plus pupils from nearby Greek language classes) ..... and so the Melksham Area Grecophiles Social Club was born. Our aim is simply to get together with fellow grecophiles, to chat about Greece and all things Greek over a drink or two, with Greek fare and Greek music.

We had five more mezes at The Bear, but chef Tony did not take the tenancy on, so we came up with a new format for a small core of regulars and ‘occasionals’ as above.

Format for Meetings since March 2007

Usually at member homes
(hosted to date in Melksham, Westbrook, Winsley, Bath, NE Bristol)
Usually Friday evenings 7.45 - 10pm’Ish, occasionally Saturday afternoons in summer
8 - 10 meetings per annum

All bring a plate of Greek-style food to share
Cost guideline £2 - £2.50 per person (home cooked or shop bought)
eg dips, pies, veg or meat keftedes, moussaka, pastitsio, salads, vegetables, feta, olives, etc
plus own drinks - It’s an easy, cheap & fair formula and it works!

Activities: chat, eat & drink over Greek music,
watch Greek tourist or music DVDs, share holiday photos, etc.
